Exercise is the last thing we want to do when we feel the dreaded twinge of back pain. But new research from the University of Colorado School of Medicine says it’s the first thing to try. To stay healthy, your spinal discs need to be in motion. This helps circulate nutrients in and waste out in your vertebrae.
Banish backaches and protect your back from injury with these three exercise:
- Bend properly. When lifting a heavy object, be sure to bend your knees beforehand. Keep your back straight and make sure the object is close to your body so your arms are bent, not outstretched.
- Stand up. Take a break for five minutes if you’ve been sitting for more than 20. Stand up, roll your shoulders backward and forward, pull in your navel, drop your tailbone, and feel yourself “growing tall”.
- Stretch Out. Round your upper back and drop your chin toward your chest. Hold for five counts. Then, lift your chin, gaze forward, and arch your lower back. Hold for five counts. Do six times per day.
