Internet addiction in China has gone out of control. A friend of mine who went to Beijing early this month happened to stay on a family who has a son that was so addicted to online gaming. The time she stayed there she saw how the government agency forcibly took the teen to a secluded military compound in Beijing. The mother told the rehab center that if her son beat her if she wouldn’t let her son touch the computer.
Statistics shows that there are around 300 million web user in China the largest in the world, so there is indeed an epidemic of internet addiction there. To combat this addiction Chinese government established the China Youth Mental Health Center in 2004. This is the first Internet addiction treatment facility of its kind in the world that treats more than 3000 patients.
According to my friend she learned that once checked in the’ most patients are required to stay for three months, isolated from the outside world without the access of mobile phones and of course computers. Depending on the development some patients stayed longer in the center for further treatment. My friend has secured a handbook from the center that states the activities inside the center. Life there accordingly is strict they wake the patients at 6:30 am and lights out at 9:30 pm. There are military drills, therapy sessions, readings and reports. Patients are also trained to eat balance meal since becoming an internet addict makes people eat only cup noodles. There are so many cases of these in China some are even well educated teens coming from prestigious universities. They are confined because most of them flanked their academics and parents are concerned for their education.
After my friend’s trip in China, she so much learned a lesson that we should give our kids other diversion aside from internet. Keep your kids in the right track so they won’t spoil their future.
