I sometimes walk in the park as an alternative on going to the gym. But am I doing it the proper way? I’ve just read from a fitness magazine that most people who do walking as their exercise does it wrong. According to fitness expert Joanna Hall most common mistake of walker is “the walking stomp”. AS you increase your walking speed, technique can be compromised and the foot tends to land very heavily, rater than in a more controlled way.
Put it right: Keep your upper body lifted as you walk, imagining you have a cup of water balanced on each shoulder that you must not spill. Focus on walking through the whole foot as you land as well.
Here are a few postural hints for perfecting your walking technique:
- Strike the ground with the heel first, rolling through the foot then pushing off with the toe
- Think “tall”- don’t slump into your hips.
- Pull in your abdominal muscles to create a strong core to support your back.
- Relax your shoulders and let your arms swing naturally without crossing your body.
- Use your natural stride- don’t try to lengthen it. If you want to increase your pace, move your arms faster-your legs will naturally speed up.
- Wear properly cushioned trainers that fit snugly without pinching.
