I really have this love for apple, this is my favorite fruit. But this has a story why I love this fruit so much. It all started when I was in college, this time I decided to be independent, I want to work while studying. My parents really opposed on my idea to work because they just want me to concentrate on my studies. But I assured them that my studies won’t be compromised while I work, as I just want to earn money for myself. Maybe all young people have that feeling right? So there at last they let me work as long as I maintain my grades and still concentrate on my subjects. My parents provide me with money for school, but I started to work as an attendant for an Internet Service Provider company.
I was lucky I did not have any problems looking for a job; I was immediately hired by an Internet Service Provider in the city. I attend my classes during the day and head to the office at around five in the afternoon. I get out of the office at around 10 in the evening that is the usual time I head off home. There was one time though that I have to fill in the vacant post for the graveyard shift. So I have no choice, but to stay and continue the work even if I still have my class the next morning. I called home to tell my parents that I wouldn’t be home until 3:00 am. As much as they want to talk to me I need to hang up the phone because I am badly needed by the group to attend the clients query. Time goes on I was still wide awake when suddenly my boss called out wanting me to come in his office. As I entered the room I was surprised to see my parents came holding a bunch of food. My mom was holding a bag that has homemade cookies and they also brought burger McDonalds. I was a bit ashamed because my boss teased me, but I was really really really touched knowing my parents really cared for me. They asked me if I am fine, if I am feeling well or am I tired. I said I was just having fun, as they are about to leave, I really hugged them and thank them for their care. I seldom feel they care maybe because they are also busy. And that time was the best time in my life. Anyway I open the other paper bag and I saw an apple. I immediately ate the apple, with that apple I felt so refreshed and rejuvenated.
Since then I have loved apples because this is the fruit my parents gave me when I felt so tired in the office. I also learned that apples are so nutritious and has a lot of benefits for us. Aside from giving us refreshments, here are some of the health benefits it gives:
Asthma Help
One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples.
Alzheimer’s Prevention
A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
Lower Cholesterol
The pectin in apples lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.
Lung Cancer Prevention
According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.
Breast Cancer Prevention
A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.
Colon Cancer Prevention
One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.
Liver Cancer Prevention
Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.
Diabetes Management
The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body’s need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.
