Appetite magazine concluded that consuming an apple before lunch can decrease your caloric ingestion at the meal by about 15%.

The study showed that those who curbed their appetite with an apple before lunch ingested 185 calories less during the meal. That alone could lead to shedding 1.5 pounds per month and 20 pounds per year. If you nosh on an apple before dinner, as well, the gains could potentially double. Before you ask, candied apples, apple pie and spiced apple cake don’t count. If you pound those before each meal instead of the good old wholesome version of the round fruit, your weight will head in the other direction.

Scientists stumbled on calcium’s magic by accident. In a Tennessee study of blood pressure in obese African Americans, people who added two cups of yogurt a day to their diet lost an average of five kilograms of body fat in one year, even though they didn’t eat less. A follow-up study found that people on a high calcium diet, the equivalent of over three daily servings of dairy, lost more weight and fat than did people on low calcium diet-and again, both groups ate the same number of calories. Researchers believe. Instead, the calcium works by encouraging fat cells to stop getter fatter. Instead, the cells burn extra fat without your having to go anywhere near a treadmill. This dinner features tofu; it’s calcium-rich and it helps lower blood cholesterol.

Even modest alcohol consumption can cause blood pressure to increase, according to two recent studies conducted in Japan.

Dr. Noriyuki Nakanishi, from the department of social and environmental medicine at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, lead author of the first study, concluded that “Alcohol use represents an important modifiable risk factor for hypertension.”

Previous research has demonstrated some health benefits for those who drink small amounts of alcohol, but the two new studies indicate that even very low alcohol consumption can be a health risk for many — almost one in every four Americans.

Alcohol Effects Olders Persons More
The first study involved more than 5,000 Japanese male office workers, between the ages of 23 and 59, for more than four years. The subjects were grouped into four categories: those who drank fewer than 12 grams of alcohol a day; those who drank 12 grams to 22 grams per day; those who drank 23 grams to 45 grams per day; and those who drank more than 46 grams per day. One glass of wine would contain about 20 grams of alcohol.

Researchers observed that as the alcohol consumption rate went up, so did blood pressure. In the 12 grams to 22 grams per day group, systolic blood pressure went up 1.4 points in those between the ages of 25 and 35, but increased 5.4 points for men between the ages of 48 and 59, indicating that drinking affects older persons more.

Risk of Hypertension
In the second of the two studies, researchers from Kyushu University followed more than 1,100 people over age 40 for 10 years. During that study, 101 men and 106 women developed hypertension with the risk of developing hypertension higher for both men and women who drank, even those who drank less than 23 grams daily.

More than 17,000 people die each year from high blood pressure complications in the U.S. and almost one in four Americans has high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hypertension can cause stroke, heart disease and kidney failure.

Both Japanese studies were published in the July 2002 issue of Alcohol: Clinical Experience and Research.

Health benefits of lemon include treatment of throat infections, indigestion, constipation, dental problems, fever, hair care, skin care, internal bleeding, rheumatism, burns, overweight, respiratory disorders, cholera and high blood pressure. Known for its therapeutic property since generations, lemon helps to strengthen your immunity system and cleanses your stomach. It is not only a blood purifier but also enables body to fight diseases. Lemon juice, especially, has several health benefits associated with it. Useful for treating kidney stones, curing heart strokes and reducing the body temperature, lemonade helps you to stay calm and cool.

Health benefits of lemon are due to many nourishing elements like vitamin C, vitamin B, phosphorous, proteins, and carbohydrates present in it. Lemon is a fruit that contains flavonoid, a composite that holds antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. It helps to prevent diabetes, constipation, high blood pressure, skin care, fever, hair care, dental care, indigestion and many other health problems. Studies conducted at the American Urological Association highlight the fact that lemonade or lemon juice can cure kidney stones by forming urinary citrate, which can prevent formation of crystals.

People use lemon to make lemonade by mixing lemon juice with water. Many people use lemon as a washing agent, as it can remove stains. Lemon can also repel mosquitoes. Drinking of lemon juice with olive oil helps to get rid of gall stones. Lemon is well known for its medicinal control and is used in many different ways. As per the results reported in a study of Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, lemon provides human guard against inflammatory polyarthritis and arthritis.

Cranberries are grown as shrubs in the wild, or on vines when cultivated. They are bright red in color and have a rich tart and slightly bitty taste to them. In the US they are predominantly grown in the northern states and southern Canada and are a larger variety than wild cranberries found in Europe.

One cup of cranberries measures roughly 50 calories. They contain zero cholesterol and the total fat composition is only 0.1 gram, which makes cranberry juice a very low-fat, healthy drink.

As with many brightly colored fruits, cranberries are rich in antioxidants which benefit the body in a number of ways. It is also an excellent source of vitamin C, a very good source of dietary fiber, and a good source of manganese and vitamin K.

Apart from other healthy nutrients they produce, the most notable benefit of cranberry juice, and what sets it apart from other fruit juices, is its ability to treat and prevent urinary tract infections.

Cranberries contain an antibacterial agent called hippuric acid which acidifies the urine. Combined with other compounds it reduces the ability of E-coli bacteria to stick to the walls of the bladder. It simply mixes with the urine and is washed away. Since E-coli are responsible for up to 90% of urinary tract infections, the protection provided by cranberry juice is quite significant. Drinking one glass of cranberry juice every day can reduce the risk of infections and prevents cystitis.

But more research has led to other important health benefits of cranberry juice including:

Help reduce high cholesterol levels – Drinking cranberry juice daily may help to increase levels of HDL, (good cholesterol) and reduce levels of LDL, (bad cholesterol). The knock on effect is less of the bad cholesterol clogging the walls of your arteries which puts less strain on the heart.

Prevention of Kidney Stone Formation – Some medical studies have shown that quinic acid, abundantly found in cranberries, may help to prevent the development of kidney stones.

Cranberries Combat Herpes Virus – Scientists have found that a substance extracted from the cranberries suppressed the genital herpes virus. Tests showed that the compound, proanthocyanidin, made it harder for the virus to penetrate cells.

Protection Against Macular Degeneration- (An affliction of the eyes that affect many people as they age).

Reduction of Dental Plaque – Studies have shown that cranberry juice can reduce the growth of bacteria that causes plaque to stick to the teeth, preventing decay and gum disease.

Prevents Stomach Related Problems – A daily glass of cranberry juice can help destroy H.pylori bacteria which cause stomach ulcers and cancer.

Water is the most overlooked “performance enhancing” supplement out there. As many as 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Dehydration can limit your physical and mental capacity. Because water is paramount in cooling your body during times of increased heat or stress, as you attempt to ramp up your exercise intensity, dehydration will cause limitations in thermal regulation, circulation and, ultimately, the generation of force.

The common recommendation is that the average, inactive person should consume at least six to eight ounces of water per day. In reality, you should probably be taking in about double that amount (on top of the water you take in from other foods). Start carrying a 16- to 20-ounce water bottle around with you during the day. Aim to refill it every three to four hours. You’ll be amazed at how much energy you get just from staying adequately hydrated. If you notice you’re making more frequent trips to the bathroom, don’t worry; as your body adapts to getting a constant supply of fluid, you’re lavatory frequency will return to more socially acceptable rates.

Celery is from the same family with parsley and fennel, the Umbelliferae family. It can grow to the height of up to 16 inches. The white celery is grown shaded from direct sunlight, thus has less chlorophyll, compared to its greener counterparts.

The ribs of celery are crunchy and are often used to make soup or salad. It has a salty taste, so celery juice is a good mix with the sweeter fruit juices. Depending on variety, some may taste very salty.

Celery leaves has high content of vitamin A, whilst the stems are an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C with rich supplies of potassium, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and plenty essential amino acids.

Nutrients in the fiber are released during juicing, aiding bowel movements. The natural organic sodium (salt) in celery is very safe for consumption, in fact is essential for the body. Even individuals who are salt-sensitive can safely take the sodium in celery, unlike table salt (iodised sodium) which is harmful for those with high blood pressure.

While many foods lose nutrients during cooking, most of the compounds in celery hold up well during cooking.

Coconut water is as good as mineral water or energy drink in hydrating our body after physical activity. Ninety five percent of coconut water is pure water, which is essential in regulating body temperature. Other than pure water, coconut water provides the body with important electrolytes such as calcium, chloride, and potassium. These electrolytes keep the body active and alert.

Besides its use as IV fluid, coconut water can be used as oral rehydration for gastroenteritis as it is rich in potassium and glucose. Since coconut water is deficient with important electrolytes sodium and chloride, table salt can be added into it to make it more effective oral rehydration fluid.

It is a common knowledge in tropical countries that coconut water is a remedy for kidney stones. It both prevents the formation of kidney stones and reduces the sizes of these stones to make their passing easier.

Coconut water is low in sodium so it will not cause high blood pressure. It may in fact regulate blood pressure as it contains electrolytes involved in regulation of blood pressure.

Coconut water contains antioxidants which help detoxify toxins in our body. They get rid of free radicals that cause cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic diseases.

The most literal “armor” of our allergy armor list, this product supposedly works by trapping airborne allergens through electrostatic forces before they enter the nose. Also on the market is Little Allergies Allergen Block, a similar product for children. While the idea of an allergen shield sounds fantastic, trapping allergens at the nose of course won’t affect allergens from entering the mouth or eyes, and, as of yet, there is no clinical trial evidence of the product’s safety or effectiveness, or even any real documentation behind its patented allergen trapping system.

According to Hippocrates (the father of medicine), celery calms the nerve – perhaps because of the high calcium content. It’s good on kidney and will help eliminate body’s waste through the urine. The seeds, leaves and edible root of the plant can all be used. Celery is used in aromatherapy and other traditional way of healing like Ayurveda. In Japan, rheumatic patients are sometimes put on a celery only diet.

Eating celery will reduce high blood pressure and give the effect of calmness.
Celery clears uric acid from painful joints and may help the treatment of arthritis and rheumatic problems.
Celery also helps the kidney an acts an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
Another benefit of celery is the fact that you can eat a lot of it without thinking much about your waistline. Celery actually has almost zero calorie.
