A study of dieters done at the University of Tennessee found that those who ate 1200 mg of calcium a day lost twice as much weight than those who avoided dairy.</p>
<p>Hot Peppers<br />
Capsaicin, the chemical in jalapenos, habaneros, and cayenne peppers gives them their bite. It speeds up heart rate and boosts metabolism. A study reported by AOL Health found that eating just one spicy meal a day boosts metabolism by up to 25%, and the calorie burn lasts for up to three hours after the meal.</p>
<p>Green Vegetables<br />
They’re a dieter’s salvation because they’re high in fiber and low in calories. In addition to their numerous health benefits, their slimming powers come from the fact that the more you eat at a meal the less room you’ll have to eat other foods that might not be so wonderful. Asparagus is especially good because it’s a natural diuretic that flushes out the system and minimizes water retention. Studies are also showing that it may play a role in fat breakdown.</p>

The result showed that children who started to use cell phones regularly five years ago were at no greater risk than those who had never used them regularly. In a subset of the study, no increased risk of brain tumors was discovered for brain areas receiving the largest amount of exposure. That’s good news, but it still comes on the heels of a World Health Organization study that determined cell phones are possibly carcinogenic. With so much money in the cell phone industry, it looks like straight answers regarding the risks will be hard to come by.</p>

<p>Solution: Sufficient lubrication, a high-quality razor and an antiseptic are your best friends when it comes to preventing razor-related catastrophes and for treating them when they occur.</p>
<p>Directions: First off, junk any cheap, disposable razors you may have lying around and invest in one with a swivel head designed to accommodate the contours of your face, and replace the blades often. A good rule of thumb is to use a new razor head once every eight shaves. Also, you can decrease your chances of having a shaving-related accident by selecting a shaving tool whose blades are spaced close together to reduce the amount of pressure you’re putting on your skin.</p>
<p>Before shaving, spend two to three minutes in a steamy environment, like the shower, making sure your skin is very wet and has time to absorb a lot of moisture. Then lubricate using a rich shaving cream to protect your skin and to make it easier for your razor to glide over the surface of your face. Be sure to rinse your razor after each stroke.</p>
<p>For those times when a bloody slipup occurs, keep an antiseptic on hand and dab with a cotton swab or apply an ice cube, as the cold will constrict your blood vessels and help stop the bleeding. Once your cut has healed slightly, use an aftershave that has a mild antiseptic in it and continue using the cotton swab to dab the damaged area.</p>

<p>The research shows that the body produces less of the sleep hormone melatonin when exposed to light.</p>
<p>Sleep patterns have been linked to some types of cancer, blood pressure and diabetes.</p>
<p>The US researchers also found lower melatonin levels in shift workers.</p>
<p>Lifestyles may have moved on from a day/night rhythm, but it seems the human body has not.</p>
<p>The pineal gland produces melatonin through the night and starts when darkness falls.</p>
<p>Researchers have shown that switching on lights in the home switches off the hormone&#8217;s production.<br />
Less melatonin</p>
<p>In the study, 116 people spent five days in room where the amount of light and sleep was controlled. They were awake for 16 hours and asleep for eight hours each day.</p>
<p>Initially the patients were exposed to 16 hours of room light during their waking hours. They were then moved onto eight hours of room light in the morning and eight hours of dim light in the evening.</p>
<p>The researchers found that electrical light between dusk and bedtime strongly suppressed melatonin levels. With dim light, melatonin was produced for 90 minutes more a day.</p>
<p>Dr Joshua Gooley, lead author from Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said: &#8220;Our study shows that this exposure to indoor light has a strong suppressive effect on the hormone melatonin.</p>
<p>&#8220;This could, in turn, have effects on sleep quality and the body&#8217;s ability to regulate body temperature, blood pressure and glucose levels.&#8221;</p>
<p>Keeping the lights on through the night also reduced the amount of melatonin produced.</p>
<p>Dr Gooley said: &#8220;Given that chronic light suppression of melatonin has been hypothesised to increase relative risk for some types of cancer and that melatonin receptor genes have been linked to type 2 diabetes, our findings could have important health implications for shift workers.&#8221;</p>
